Yet another AT blog...




40 years ago (4/9/1982) brother Rodney and I started hiking north from Georgia. Turned out to not quite be a "thru" hike (doing entire trail in the same year, as conventionally defined), but certainly the begining of a long obsession.  Now starting number 4, hiking north from Harpers Ferry, after getting a ride from friend Leslie who will visit family near Baltimore. Hope to walk back home to MA, or until bugs, hot weather or whatever tells me otherwise. I last did this section 7 years ago, starting late April and walking from the Potomac to the Hudson before warm weather, bugs, and a small leg sore (which turned out to be a squamous cell cancerous growth) persuaded me to leave the trail. That was the beginning of my 3rd complete AT hike, finishing in 2019.

So the adventure starts all over again, age 72 and not much wiser, just more experienced. Or as I prefer to think:  well worn but not worn out.

Very cold but not windy so not quite as bad as previous night, but still didn't sleep well. Only 11 miles to town so dawdled, and a day hiker came in at 7:30 and proceeded to pull out his ancient Svea stove (same type we carried in 1982) so a gear head retrospectively, collecting old style camping stuff. Hiked out, down to valley then up next ridge over, and the famous PA rocks begin in earnest. Warming, and when I stop for lunch the first mosquito lands on my arm. Had already seen a few bees and worms. Long rocky ridge walk, then steep (need I say rocky?) down to Duncannon and the broad Susquehanna river rolling by, very high but not in flood. To Kind of Outdoorsy store and hostel, meet a guy staying there with car who drives me to grocery store for the price of a few pieces of cooked chicken.  Buy 4 days worth of food, back to hostel to find Chief checking in, planning a slack back tomorrow. Alec Kennedy shelter

 Just shy of 16 miles but can feel it tonight, back tight and can't wait to stretch out and get warm in my sleeping bag. Very cold night ahead. Reflecting on the hikers I've met, it's clear that the trail attracts many different people, but it mostly brings out the goodness in folks, a shared camaraderie and caring. This is my community, this is my church.  Didn't sleep that well at hostel, raining heavily during the night, misting in morning and a 9am departure when rain finally ended, except a few sprinkles in the first few hours. Wet trail, rocky in patches, long lunch after 9 miles at store just off trail on Rt PA34. Picked up some hand warmers (nod to So Far So Good). Sun and clouds, warming up then cooling quickly, more up and down and rocky stretches, including several "rock mazes" fun to navigate but tiring and slowing me down. First 70 miles

 Left Harpers Ferry on April Fool's Day, sunny but windy, some sleet squalls at end, 11 miles to Crampton Gap shelter and a very cold night. Shared shelter with an older couple, Chip and Dale, experienced hikers (he did the AT in 1997; they tried the PCT in 2020, stopped due to COVID closures). Retired school teachers (her English, him chemistry, after a Navy career 20 years in nuclear subs) from NH with some stories to tell (kid who lost a dare and had to try to eat a filthy kitchen sponge, another kid electrocuted himself using alligator clips plugged into an outlet -- another stupid dare, but kid survived after CPR -- shop teacher did get fired) Still cold and windy second day, long 16.5 to Pogo memorial campsite, just past Annapolis Rocks where I had camped 7 years ago. On the way met Rosy Eagle, at 80 starting his 4th AT. Another old and odd coot as bad as me  Lots of people out on a Saturday so I thought the next campsite would be better.
